Pass the QID (including the 'Q' prefix) as the first argument.
The referenced item should be the same as the containing page's subject; for an item that is only related, use a regular [[wikidata:]] link.
As with sitelinks on Wikipedia, this template should appear at most once on each page, and no two pages should be associated with the same QID (these points follow from the previous).
